Leicester Lions are favourites to stay in Premiership after first-leg win over Sheffield

Leicester Lions have moved a step closer to retaining their status as a Premiership club next season.
The Lions eased their way to a 58-32 win in the first leg of the promotion and relegation race-off against Sheffield Tigers at Owlerton Stadium.
Team manager Jim Lynch was delighted with the victory ahead of next week’s second leg.
“It was as close as you can get to the perfect performance, and I was proud of my team who
approached this match determined to get a result,” he said.
“We had only three races where one of my riders was unplaced and we took the chequered flag in 11 of the 15 heats.
“We had total respect for the Sheffield team, who have ridden magnificently to win the Championship title.
“They have been in unbeatable form, having scored 50 points-plus in 19 of their 20 home meetings, so we knew the scale of the task in front of us.
“But from the moment we won the first race by maximum points, I sensed that it was going to be our night.
“You can be assured that I will be looking for my riders to duplicate the same high-intensity
performance in the return fixture at Beaumont Park on Monday to ensure we complete the job and remain in the Premiership for next season.”
Sheffield 32 : Scott Nicholls 5 points, Todd Kurtz 6+1, Lasse Bjerre 12, Josh Bates 4, Rider Replacement for Kyle Howarth, Jan Graversen 5 and Georgie Wood 0.
Leicester 58 : Kim Nilsson 13+1 points, Lewis Kerr 3, rider replacement for Pawel Przedpelski, Erik Riss 5+1, Danny King 13+2, Cameron Heeps 11+1 and Kyle Newman 13+2.

Second leg switched to next Monday

Leicester’s home leg of the play-off with Sheffield was due to take place tonight but has now been switch to Monday evening.
This early decision has been taken after consultation with GoSpeed’s Terry Russell and BT Sport to minimise inconvenience with rain expected.
“It’s a mutual thing, we’ve had a great season on BT Sport and this is a big meeting, so we don’t want to risk fans on the night and TV viewers watching a meeting in poor conditions and risk not going the distance,” said Russell.
“I’ve spoken to BT Sport, Leicester and Sheffield, and everyone is happy with the decision.
